google earth

u can do guided tours or one that is created.
google earth needs to be upgraded to latest version.
top left area allows to fly over an area. you can put an address and fly over it.
need to do street view and 3d bldgs.
great for language teachers to show paris or madrid.
left area is controlling area. top is search area, where we’ll type. bottom area is layers, it comes w/google earth. these r constantly changing, adding new features. these r layers that can be turned on/off.
keep on: street view, 3d renderings for zooming in and around.
weather: gives some options: clouds, radar conditions, in real time. doppler radar which gives amount of precipitation in cloud. as u zoom in u get more informaiton (degrees, more localized weather)
borders and labels with place names.
not a good idea to hv too many layers on at the same time.
gallery and global awareness layers. constantly revised. hot spots issues of the day.overlays on darfur and villages destroyed, about animals in extinction, etc.
global awareness: overlayed, crisi in darfur. when it has a triangle, it has a down menu. turn on layer by layer. here’s the darfrur region, what do u notice? surrounding countries? let’s turn borders on and really see in context where it is. zoom in and names of countries come in, continue turning in more layers. explore layers on ur own. holocaust museum is creating a variety of overlays.
places is at the middle left area. it’s where tours will reside. y can create stops along the way. kml is the programming language. keynote markup language. the odysee’s tour: shows his journey, geographically. guided tour of his hourner: pictures of Troy, models of bldgs., ships. bayeux tapestry, it shows the journey. to slow it down, go to google earth>preferences>touring . always hv show balloon. tour pause, you can change how much it stops in e/journey.
ctrl+click+delete
scavenger hunt in paris. had to find a place where to eat, a cinema, a metro stop…
eiffel tower, zoom in. in fly>find businesses>write down cafes, you can find reviews, we can get more information . for cinema, the map appears w/balloons and we can choose one, open it and it will bring in different information thru the link. there are also websites that can open in different languages.
about the great pyramids: discussion on a grand angular view, to see where it’s located, how it looks around it, what is around.
kml files for different subjects: candide, shakespeare, etc.
to find an item: go on to earth.google.com and go to gallery. hundreds of files that people uploaded for us to use.
can also find thru google>advanced search>find web pages…:subject I want>file type: google earth KML or ppt.
to download: ctrl+click>save link as and download.
it stores: in my places.
the saturn feature will go to google sky. layers change. press saturn again, it switches back to earth.

I should be writing about what I read for today, but my cat sat on my laptop and did not let me. I’ll make sure he finds another pillow tonight. See you tomorrow!

End of day 1: Reading of ch. 14. I particularly enjoyed the notion of the wikis. I even like its name! What I find most intriguing about these “new” technologies is the principle of community-sharing-collaborative work.

RSS feeds seem like a great way of being on top of things. I’m learning more about blogging and I think it has great potential for different projects we already do. This would be a great addition.
